Overview
SelfControl is the best completely free website blocker for Mac. It's open-source, donation-supported, and creates system-level blocks that can't be bypassed even by restarting your computer. It stands out for one key reason: it's impossible to undo once activated.
Features
- Unbreakable Blocks: Once set, blocks cannot be disabled until the timer expires
- Website Blacklist: Block specific websites for a set period
- Whitelist Mode: Block everything except specified sites
- Custom Block Lists: Create lists of sites to block together
- Flexible Timers: Set block duration from minutes to hours
- System-Level Blocking: Blocks persist across all browsers and apps
- Survives Restart: Blocks remain active even if you restart your Mac
- Survives Deletion: Deleting the app doesn't disable active blocks
- Free and Open Source: Completely free with source code available
- Donation-Supported: Sustained by user donations
- Privacy-Focused: No data collection or tracking
- Lightweight: Minimal system resource usage
The Unbreakable Promise
SelfControl is designed to be impossible to bypass:
- Can't uninstall: Deleting the app doesn't remove active blocks
- Can't restart: Rebooting your Mac doesn't end the blocking session
- Can't disable: No "emergency off" switch exists
- Only workaround: Reinstalling macOS entirely (which nobody does for website access)
This extreme approach makes SelfControl uniquely effective for people who need ironclad commitment to avoid distractions.
