Andrew Huberman Focus Protocols

Overview

Andrew Huberman, PhD, is a neuroscientist and professor at Stanford University who has developed practical protocols for optimizing focus and productivity based on neuroscience research. His work on focus and time management has gained widespread attention.

The 90-Minute Focus Block

Huberman's research and recommendations center on aligning work sessions with the brain's natural ultradian cycles:

• Duration: 90 minutes to two hours for deep, focused work
• Frequency: 1-3 focus blocks per day, depending on individual capacity
• Timing: Best performed during peak alertness hours (typically morning to early afternoon)

Key Protocols

Pre-Focus Preparation:

• Get morning sunlight exposure to set circadian rhythm
• Delay caffeine intake 90-120 minutes after waking
• Use cold exposure or brief exercise to increase alertness

During Focus Sessions:

• Eliminate all distractions and interruptions
• Expect initial resistance for the first 5-15 minutes
• Maintain narrow visual focus to enhance cognitive focus
• Avoid context switching or multitasking

Recovery Between Sessions:

• Take 10-30 minute breaks
• Engage in panoramic vision or outdoor exposure
• Allow the brain to rest before the next session

Scientific Basis

The protocols are based on research about:

• Neuroplasticity and learning
• Attention and focus mechanisms
• Circadian and ultradian rhythms
• Dopamine and motivation systems
